What percentage of dogs die naturally in their sleep?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 by

I haven’t heard of many cases of dogs passing away while sleeping (and please no comments about putting a dog to sleep, this is a different question) and I was wondering if anyone had an average statistic. Thanks!

As far as I can tell, when animals instinctively realize that they are going to pass away soon in a natural way(it is unique to animals, and in some cases to humans)),they go somewhere to hide so that no other creatures will see them. That is why you never see them pass away while they are sleeping.

I don’t have the number, but I know our dog did just that. We woke up one morning to find her dead behind the chair.

one died cause he was a good jumper (Kelpie) an was hit by a car 3 times, last time he was killed
    one got cancer
    our rotty got skin mites
another rotty got bitten by a snake

An older dog will die naturally in its sleep, that was very common back before 1970. Nowadays, people bring their dogs to vets and vets tell them how "painful" dieing is and they put dogs down before they reach that point. Some illnesses are and some are not so bad and it is worth living until they can’t any longer and the body naturally gives out. That is a value judgment call that should only be made by the owner. Nowadays the statistics are skewed though because of the number of people that pay for euthanasia or bring dogs to shelters because they don’t want to pay for euthanasia.

it depends on the dog, one may appear to die naturally when it’s really not they may become unconscious then die in that case it would appear that they are asleep when they’re really just shutting down. the problem in you can’t really ask a dog what it’s feeling so you wouldn’t know if it got into the shed or if someone poisoned it intentionally.

I have never had a dog die of natural causes. I have only ever had dogs be put down due to really harsh things. (cancer mostly)
Right now I have a dog that I love very much, she is indeed my baby, and thoughts of ever having to have her put down or anything just breaks my heart.
I think though that maybe at this point about 10-15% of dogs die of natural causes in there sleep. I think dogs were probably heahtier before we got all the health food for pets.

Slugging percentage is the measure of the power of a hitter calculated by total bases divided by at-bats. On base plus slugging represents the ability of a player to get on base AND hit for power, calculated as the sum of a player's on base percentage and slugging percentage (it measures offensive worth). Isolated power is a measure of a hitter's raw power, in terms of extra bases per at-bat. Secondary average is the average of the bases a batter gains from sources other than base hits, like walks and stolen bases. Hope this helps!

The Giver lets you have 2 children, one girl and one boy. In China you can only have one child. The rules are strict in both. I can't remember, but I think they are both dictatorships. Everyone looks about the same in both. China uses the Death Penalty while The Giver uses Releasing, (I'm reading the same book in my class and I don't know what releasing means yet).
