West Allis, Wis., (PRWEB) September 20, 2009

The Sleep Wellness Institute, Inc., Wisconsin’s largest independent sleep disorders diagnosis and treatment center, has expanded its insomnia treatment services to include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and has hired licensed clinical psychologist Lisa Cottrell, Ph.D., to provide the new service.

“Insomnia is more than not sleeping well,” explained Mark Stoiber, President of the Sleep Wellness Institute. “It’s characterized by consistently having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.” A serious health issue if left untreated, chronic insomnia can disrupt daily life and damage health. Numerous studies have shown a link between consistently poor sleep and depression, anxiety disorders, diabetes and even heart disease.

Dr. Cottrell explained that “Without treatment, insomnia usually will not just go away. For some, medication may be helpful. But for most, this option leaves unwanted side effects and sometimes can cause ‘rebound insomnia’ when medication is stopped. That’s because medication can’t address the factors that contribute to insomnia. That’s where Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help.”

CBT has been used for years to successfully treat everything from anxiety to chronic pain. Studies now show that 70% to 80% of people with chronic insomnia see improvement with CBT treatment. Studies also show that the sleep improvement lasts for years after treatment is finished. That’s because CBT puts power in patients’ hands and teaches them how to gain control over their sleep. With this treatment, good sleep becomes a way of life.

The Sleep Wellness Institute is accredited to diagnose and treat both adults and children with sleep disorders by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It is also one of only a handful of sleep disorders centers certified by the Academy to train sleep technologists.

New York, NY (Vocus) June 11, 2009 -

Laurence Barsh, DMD spoke at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in Seattle on June 5, 2009 on the subject of educating the public about dentistry’s role in the management of snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Barsh advised the attendees that the profession has an obligation to screen dental patients for snoring and sleep apnea and work with physicians in management of treatment. He said that while practice web sites are an ideal way to educate the public about the medical problems associated with sleep breathing disorders and dentistry’s role in their treatment, more effort is needed to reach those who may be unaware that they have a sleep breathing disorder.

“Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are ideal ways to start a conversation with the public who may not know that their health can be affected by problems with breathing during sleep,” said Dr. Barsh in a recent interview. “Our role as doctors,” continued Barsh, “is primarily one of education. People who are unaware that they may have a sleep-breathing problem are online and we have to go where they are if we are to succeed in any form of awareness campaign! “

It has been estimated that in the United States alone 20 million men, women and children suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Millions more snore. Of these 20 million, only about 10% have been diagnosed despite the fact that the average life span of an untreated sleep apneic is years less than those without sleep apnea. Snoring and sleep apnea have been related to heart disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, depression and erectile dysfunction as well as vehicular accidental injury and death. The increased medical costs of those with untreated sleep apnea are estimated to be in the billions a year.

About Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC

The Sleep Wellness Institute, Inc., Wisconsin’s largest independent sleep disorders diagnosis and treatment center, now offers a free, online service that allows web users to determine if they are at risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

The screening service is a combination of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Berlin sleep apnea questionnaire, and a body mass index (BMI) calculator. The Epworth helps determine a person’s daytime sleepiness level, the Berlin is focused on behaviors that are typical of sleep apnea, and the BMI is based on weight and height. A BMI of 30 or greater is considered one of the risk factors of sleep apnea.

The interactive screening can be found on the Sleep Wellness Institute’s website, www.sleepwellandlive.com.

Sleep apnea is a common, yet serious sleep disorder that can lead to or exacerbate other health problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes, explained Mark Stoiber, president of the Sleep Wellness Institute. It affects approximately 18 million Americans and is typified by snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, and daytime exhaustion.

The Sleep Wellness Institute is accredited to diagnose and treat both adults and children with sleep disorders by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It is also one of only a handful of sleep disorders centers in the country certified by the Academy to train sleep technologists.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) June 9, 2008

Marketdata Enterprises, Inc. (www.marketdataenterprises.com), a leading independent market research publisher, has released a groundbreaking new 145-page market study entitled: ”The U.S. Sleep Market.” This is a complete analysis of all segments of the United States sleep aids business.

“Of a total population of 305 million Americans, 58% are estimated to experience insomnia symptoms or sleep disorders. Companies across America are trying to sell us a perfect night’s sleep with sleeping pills, premium mattresses, high tech pillows, white noise machines, sleep masks, aromatherapy, and more. Sleep disorder diagnosis and sleep hygiene has fast become a $ 23.7 billion a year industry,” according to Research Director, John LaRosa.

Major Findings:

Marketdata estimates that the U.S. sleep market was worth $ 23.7 billion in 2007. However, growth this year will be less than 1%, due to the recession, more home testing, and more generic sales of sleeping pills. To 2012, we forecast 8.8% annual growth.

The major anti-insomnia drug producers spent $ 619 million last year advertising Ambien CR, Lunesta and Rozerem, producing $ 2.7 billion in sales. However, this was down 18% as Ambien came off patent and sales of generics rose. New drugs are in the pipeline.

Sleep Labs, which perform studies to diagnose sleep disorders, are estimated to number 3,300+. The typical lab has revenues of $ 1.33 million and conducts 1,250 studies per year. Labs are located in hospitals, MD practices, universities, or are independent. This segment will be worth $ 4.47 billion in 2008.

A March 2008 ruling by the Center for Medicare Services will have a major impact on the field of sleep medicine. Portable devices may now be used for home testing, resulting in short-term uncertainties for sleep labs but boosting the market for CPAP devices – a $ 2.4 billion market that’s growing 18% a year to 2012 and that’s dominated by ResMed and Respironics.

The huge $ 13.7 billion retail mattress market and $ 900 million pillows market are being hurt by the recession. Retail sales are forecast to grow just 1% this year, but to rebound in 2009. Premium non-innerspring (air, memory foam) models are selling well.
According to Research Director, John LaRosa: “As obesity rates climb and Americans age, more people are developing sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and other sleep disorders. Plus, stressors from the economy, terrorism, longer workdays, and women entering menopause are resulting in more sleepless nights. Some claim that ‘sleep is the new sex — we need more of it and can’t get enough of it.’ First launched in 1977, there are now about 3,300 ‘sleep labs’ in the United States.”

Competitor Profiles provided for: ResMed, Respironics, SleepMed, Sleep Solutions, Sleep Holdings, Avastra Sleep Centres, Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Serta, Select Comfort, Simmons, Apollo Health, and Marpac.

Note: Marketdata also operates a leading consumer healthcare website covering a wide variety of sleep disorder topics, named: www.sleepweb.com .

About the Report & Marketdata

Marketdata Enterprises is a leading independent market research publisher and consulting firm with a specialty tracking service sectors since 1979.

The ”U.S. Sleep Market,” published in June 2008, is a complete analysis of the sleep aids market. It contains 25 tables and is 145 pages long. The study costs $ 1,895, but is sold by individual chapters at lower cost. It is available in digital or print format. This new Marketdata study examines all major market segments: anti-insomnia drugs (OTC & prescription), sleep labs, mattresses and pillows, CPAPs (continuous positive airway pressure devices) for sleep apnea, and retail sleep aids (earplugs, sleep lamps, sound machines, eye masks, books on sleep).

Marketdata performed a custom mail survey of 900+ sleep labs in March-May, deriving key operating ratios, average revenues, patient demographics, and more.

The study includes market size estimates for 1987-2007, with 2008 and 2012 forecasts, client demographics, in-depth competitor profiles and rankings in each market segment, discussions of market nature & structure, history and evolution, in view of recent Medicare rulings regarding home testing. Advertising strategies, R&D, sleep disorder publicity and other demand factors analyzed.

Hanover Park, IL (PRWEB) November 4, 2009 -

Dr. Jin Zhou of SleepApneaUSA.net announced an alternative, potential sleep apnea solution for commercial pilots and drivers. The NTSB recently recommended mandatory sleep apnea certification for sleep apnea testing and subsequent “successful treatment” after the two pilots of northwest airlines flight 188 overshot their destination airport, Minneapolis, by 150 miles on October 21, 2009. Both have since lost their pilot licenses. “Although the NTSB is absolutely correct by mandating sleep apnea testing and “successful treatment” based on well-known scientific facts and current sleep apnea knowledge as well as the long history of transportation accidents caused by sleep apnea patients”, said Dr. Jin Zhou, “it is practically impossible to implement these mandatory certifications without more practical solutions available, because more than 60% of sleep apnea patients can’t tolerate the gold standard sleep apnea therapy, which is sleeping with a CPAP face mask for life”. And the CPAP does not cure sleep apnea patients, it affords only temporary relief. And more than 50% of commercial pilots may lose their pilot’s license forever after the new mandates are enacted as federal laws. Therefore, unless absolutely federally involuntary mandated, most commercial pilots are not expected to voluntarily go through sleep apnea testing, which may mean immediate suspension or forever loss of their pilot’s license. The same consequences would be true for all commercial drivers in the U.S.A.. Dr. Jin Zhou urged the federal government, the FMCSA, the FTA, the FAA, all airlines, the scientific and medical communities as well as the insurance industry to immediately seek more practical solutions, in addition to the currently available surgical and CPAP options to alleviate or cure sleep apnea. If possible, all of the commercial pilots with sleep apnea should be effectively controlled or cured with new options, especially since many won’t tolerate standard CPAP therapy or invasive surgeries.

The NTSB made the same sleep apnea recommendations indirectly to The Coast Guard. “Actually, the NTSB sleep apnea recommendation should be scientifically correct and practically more important, as our national security, to all U.S. military pilots and combat personnel, after reported death of a soldier due to inoperable CPAP in Iraq”, said Dr. Jin Zhou, a former orthopedic surgeon with the China Air Force General Hospital in Beijing, China 21 years ago.

Sleep apnea is a deadly illness if without timely diagnosis and proper treatment, however, the current standard medical treatments are only focused on the surgeries and expensive, lifetime devices, with very limited clinical results and they are only for less than 30% of the sleep apnea population. Dr. Jin Zhou recently offered a Sleep Apnea ZHT Certification Class for healthcare providers as the no-surgery and no-device alternative for sleep apnea patients who could not tolerate or benefit from the standard sleep apnea medical treatment which consists of surgery and CPAP or oral devices.

Sleep apnea has been scientifically reported to be linked with the most of the CDC’s Top 10 death-cause medical diagnoses and traffic accidents as well as the spending of billions of dollars for treating sleep apnea related medical conditions and from the labor production losses by sleep apnea resulted sickness and disabilities. Very sadly, millions of Americans already diagnosed with sleep apnea could not tolerate with or benefit from the standard medical treatment by the surgery and CPAP or any oral devices.

It was estimated that more than 95-97% of sleep apnea sufferers were never diagnosed. Even for those patients already diagnosed with sleep apnea, it was reported that only less than 20% of them have good tolerance and compliance with the prescribed gold CPAP therapy, and more than 60% to 80% of patients already diagnosed with sleep apnea have no or poor tolerance with or benefit from the standard medical treatment with CPAP or surgery.

It is now reasonably well-known and established that sleep apnea has been linked to most of the CDC’s top 10 death-cause medical conditions, such as heart attack, cancer, stroke and diabetes. However, the original or ultimate cause for sleep apnea is not clearly known at all to the scientists and health care practitioners. Dr. Jin Zhou challenges the popular or mainstream theory in etiology for the sleep apnea that obstruction or collapse of the upper airway is due to the weakened and enlarged soft palate. As a matter of fact, as Dr. Jin Zhou hypothesized, the clinical reality is the exact opposite or completely different, therefore the current mainstream clinical treatment protocols by surgery and CPAP or oral devices are not expected to ultimately cure sleep apnea but simply to provide for some limited or short-term relief or temporarily cover up the deterioration of sleep apnea development.

In developing the new ZHT (Zhou’s Hypoxicology Therapy) treatment of sleep apnea, Dr. Zhou, observed clinically that trachea caudal displacement (TCD) (the windpipe moving downward), resulted from diaphragm malfunction and baroreflex dysfunction, instead of weakened soft appellate as claimed by the mainstream scientists, is the main anatomical pathology for snoring, collapse of the upper airway and frequent breathing stops during the night for people with obstructive sleep apnea. In addition, as Dr. Zhou hypothesized, the dysfunction of the baroreflex, chemoreflex, metabo-reflex, mechanoreflex, psychosomato-reflex and respiration pace-making malfunction, due to psychological, environmental and anatomical causations, are primarily and intricately responsible for the obstructive and central sleep apnea development. Dr. Zhou further hypothesized that all of these sleep apnea etiological components are primarily controlled or regulated internally by the human body but induced externally. Therefore, sleep apnea should be completely reversible primarily through volitional resuscitation, resetting of the baroreflex and revitalization of the upper airway defense reflex by working through patient’s body internally instead of externally through surgeries and devices.

ZHT, Zhou’s Hypoxicology Therapy, as pioneered by its creator, Dr. Jin Zhou, is a new scientific concept and pioneering (aka, unproven) clinical solution as an alternative approach for sleep apnea. ZHT was noticed to be clinically beneficial not only to those sleep apnea patients but also to those patients with commonly seen medical conditions, from headache to sciatica, and mysteriously hard to treat medical conditions as a result of hypoxia, baroreflex dysfunction and dysautonomia.

Although it is not legally and scientifically permissible to claim ZHT as a new standard medical protocol, according to Dr. Jin Zhou, it is clinically and optimistically observed that ZHT therapy shall be safe and effective or otherwise ZHT should be discontinued if a patient is not responding to ZHT with definitely noticeable relief on the first session and with satisfactory and significant results within three sessions.

Dr. Jin Zhou, D.C., M.D. (China), a former orthopedic surgeon 21 years ago in China and currently a licensed chiropractic physician in Illinois for the last 18 years, is dedicated to developing a revolutionary breakthrough, an extremely simple and super natural therapy that could potentially save millions of lives and trillions of dollars without having to rely upon only medication, surgery and device. He coined the new word, “Hypoxicology”. Dr. Zhou is also a nationally renowned expert in healthcare compliance and reimbursement. Dr. Jin Zhou is the president of ERISAclaim.com.

Vestal, NY (PRWEB) October 27, 2006

30 million insomnia sufferers that live in the United States and tens of millions worldwide can now breathe a sigh of relief. GreatNightSleep.com today announced the availability of their new insomnia treatment “Great Night Sleep 2™”, an effective herbal remedy which combines 13 ingredients into one easy-to-swallow tablet.

Great Night Sleep 2 is being launched on the special day of November 6th. Why is this date so special? Back in 2001 on this very date, a young entrepreneur from Vestal New York helped create the original Great Night Sleep Premium Sleep Enhancer™. 5 years later this same natural sleep remedy has already changed the lives of tens of thousands of people in 18 countries by eliminating insomnia and it continues to help more people everyday.

Bill Rutley, a client of GreatNightSleep.com from Tennessee said recently: “I have struggled with insomnia for over 20 years. Even prescription sleep medicine was only marginally effective and all had side effects. Great Night Sleep gets me to sleep and has given me 6 to 8 hours of effective sleep every night and with no side effects.”

“It’s called Great Night Sleep for a reason.” Brown said. “It helps people who suffer from insomnia, sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome.

While prescription drugs are the main treatment for insomnia inside the United States, the natural ingredients contained in Great Night Sleep 2™ have been used as a successful insomnia treatment for millions of people in hundreds of countries for thousands of years. Ingredients include: Chamomile, Valerian Root, Passion Flower, L-Taurine, Lemon Balm, 5-HTP, GABA, Melatonin and more.

“Insomnia treatments like Ambien® and Lunesta® are very helpful for some but not effective for every sufferer of insomnia. Plus these prescription sleep medications come with potential side effects. We have found with our natural insomnia treatment Great Night Sleep Premium Sleep Enhancer that people no longer have trouble falling asleep. People are staying asleep throughout the night and when they wake up they feel completely rested, refreshed, and ready to conquer the day. Also people are reporting that they have more energy during the day and this is due to them getting a good night sleep. Best of all with Great Night Sleep people don’t have to worry about side effects or addictive qualities. It is truly a safe, effective, all-natural treatment for insomnia.” Says Jeff Brown, founder of GreatNightSleep.com

Hanover Park, IL (PRWEB) November 6, 2009

The recent NTSB mandatory recommendations for sleep apnea testing and treatment are expected to become a law very soon for commercial pilots and drivers due to the eminent public safety and tort liability litigation concerns. It’s reported that in the current tracking industry, a sleep apnea lab testing could cost about $ 2,000 with a waiting period of up to six months. More than 60% of diagnosed apnea patients can not tolerate standard CPAP Treatment. Dr. Jin Zhou of SleepApneaUSA.net proposed an immediate alternative solution in hope to save thousands of lives, before the next pilot and driver can be tested in a standard lab, because it is well known that a driver with sleep apnea is much more dangerous than a drunk driver with DUI risk factors. Dr. Zhou proposed, to the government and the public, that all commercial pilots and drivers to be immediately tested for sleep apnea screening with a portable home sleep apnea test device, costing only about $ 500, that is FDA cleared, Medicare and FMCSA accepted, and that those with positive apnea results should be re-tested in a standard sleep lab and be treated immediately under standard medical programs with CPAP or surgery if indicated. In addition, Dr. Zhou offered an immediate alternative sleep apnea solution, ZHT (Zhou’s Hypoxicology Therapy) for more than 60% of sleep apnea positive pilots and drivers who cannot tolerate CPAP and not indicated for surgery, and for those who have CPAP tolerance and compliance with satisfactory results but prefer to live a lifestyle without a lifetime sleeping mask. Last week, Dr. Zhou announced ZHT Certification training class schedules for 2010 in Chicago for healthcare providers after more than 20 years of clinical research and four years of ZHT clinical training for healthcare providers nationwide.

Under ZHT Sleep Apnea Protocol, a patient is expected to see definitive noticeable results on the first visit, significant and satisfactory results within three sessions or ZHT therapy should be discontinued. Generally speaking, a patient with mild sleep apnea is expected to be well-controlled or with apnea eliminated within one month, moderate sleep apnea within two months, and severe sleep apnea within three months or longer for some cases. ZHT Certification Training Program is only available to healthcare providers in any types and specialties. Dr. Zhou hopes that his ZHT sleep apnea programs will ensure that NTSB’s sleep apnea recommendations are practically implementable for immediate public safety, and ZHT shall only be an alternative solution in addition to standard medical practice without any conflict.

Today, a new report indicated that 75% of young Americans are unfit for military service, mostly due to physical problems rather than criminal history and lack of education. Exercise-induced asthma, strength and endurance deficiency as well as obesity are directly related to undiagnosed sleep apnea. We have been clearly warned by the avalanche amount of new reports on sleep apnea caused illness and disabilities from active military personnel and military veterans. The most long-term disability claims litigated in federal court were ultimately resulted from the illness caused by undiagnosed sleep apnea, according to Dr. Jin Zhou, who is also an ERISA expert.

Sleep apnea is a deadly illness if without timely diagnosis and proper treatment, however, the current standard medical treatments are only focused on the surgeries and expensive, lifetime devices, with very limited clinical results and they are only for less than 30% of the sleep apnea population.

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) December 13, 2005

Integrative Interventions, Inc., announces the release of The Sleep Advisor™ — a computer program that evaluates sleep using the same methods employed by sleep specialists. The program, which provides immediate results includes extensive personalized recommendations for improving sleep and is intended for use by consumers in the privacy of their own homes.

The Sleep Advisor is the result of a 10-year collaboration between C. Roger Smolin and Rubin Naiman, PhD, the sleep specialist and clinical assistant professor of medicine in Dr. Andrew Weil’s world-renowned Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.

As the result of a serious shortage of sleep medicine specialists, the majority of people with sleep problems remain undiagnosed and untreated. The Sleep Advisor offers an easy, economical, and effective alternative to conventional sleep medicine. For less than the cost of one month’s supply of sleeping pills, the program provides a thorough sleep health screening and comprehensive recommendations for addressing sleep problems.

The Sleep Advisor represents a significant breakthrough in the area of sleep health. Crafted with meticulous concern for efficiency and effectiveness, the program uses an integrative medicine approach that blends the best of conventional healthcare with proven complementary and alternative medicine (cam) approaches. The Sleep Advisor, which has undergone four years of comprehensive testing, relies on both extensive scientific research and broad-based clinical experience in sleep disorders.

“Sleep disorders, such as insomnia, apnea, and insufficient sleep are the most prevalent health concern in the U.S. and can erode our physical and mental health.” Naiman said. “We want people to know that there are proven, effective, and user-friendly alternatives. The Sleep Advisor is not a simplistic health screening device. It is an expert system that utilizes sophisticated diagnostic formulas derived from the practice of sleep medicine.”

Smolin brings 30 years of experience in creating expert systems and consumer-based software to the design of The Sleep Advisor. Naiman founded the sleep health program at the world-famous Canyon Ranch Health Resort, is a sleep consultant at the Miraval Resort near Tucson, and is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) September 18, 2007

The American Sleep Association is preparing for Sleep Apnea Awareness Week, a national event focused on increasing public awareness about this potentially deadly sleep disorder. The event will occur during the first seven days of October.

Local and national members and affiliates of the American Sleep Association (ASA) will be participating in the event. ASA affiliated sleep disorder laboratories will be prepared to answer questions from the public about sleep apnea. The website, www.SleepApneaAwarenessWeek.com , sponsored by the ASA, will feature a unique lecture on sleep apnea each day during the week.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disorder characterized by repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep caused by a temporary blockage in the throat. Over 5% of adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Most individuals affected by the disorder are unaware of its presence. Dr. Neil Kline, of the ASA, states, “Sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents as well as an increase risk of heart attack, stroke, and deadly heart rhythms. Yet, it is easily treated once it is diagnosed.”

There are a few options available for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most popular and successful treatment option. A mask placed over the nose delivers air pressure into the throat, preventing the airway from closing during the night. Other treatment options include a custom-made mouth piece, weight loss, and surgery.

Once treated, individuals diagnosed with sleep apnea often feel significantly more alert, and also decrease their risk of heart attacks, strokes, and accidents related to excessive daytime sleepiness.

The American Sleep Association (ASA) is a national organization focused on improving public awareness about sleep disorders, promoting sleep medicine research, and providing a portal for communication between patients, physicians/healthcare professionals and scientists. The ASA is a member-driven public service project. For further information about Sleep Apnea Awareness Week, visit http://www.sleepassociation.org or http://www.SleepApneaAwarenessWeek.com.
