Natural Cures for Depression – Herbal Remedies for Depression

Sunday, October 25th, 2009 by

Depression is a very common affliction that affects many people at one time or another in their lives. While severe depression may require a pharmaceutical approach for successful treatment, many milder cases of depression can be managed through more natural methods. If you are on a specialized diet for a medical condition, check with your doctor before making any changes.

There are a number of foods you can take that will make you feel better and omega 3 is just one of them, that can help combat depression ( see our other articles for more foods to fight the blues ) and also have a positive affect on overall health.

Most people suffering from bouts of depression, anxiety and general mood disorders that greatly affect their quality of life don’t even know that they have non-prescription options to treat their depression effectively.

One treatment that has strong evidence to support that is good as a natural way of treating depression is St John’s Wort extract. There have been over 20 controlled clinical trials of it which shows that it effectively relieves depression. In fact studies show that it works just as well as prescription antidepressants such as Paxil and Prozac and also has fewer side effects than them. So with this in mind, people should consider St John’s Wort as their first choice for treating depression naturally.

Other herbal remedies that are gaining popularity as cures for mild depression are ginkgo biloba, kava kava and black cohosh. Each of these is used for a specific type of depression. Ginkgo biloba is primarily used by people suffering from mild depression and memory loss or other dulled mental functions because it helps improve overall mental health. Kava kava is used mainly for anxiousness associated with depression because it calms a person and helps them fall asleep and have more restful sleep.

The effects of depression can only be mitigated. There is no absolute remedy for depression. Dietary changes or herbal supplements can only mitigate the effects of depression. An effective therapy program suggested by your doctor will help you understand what self-talk is and how it can used to minimize depression naturally.

There are many other natural supplements that can help you fight illnesses and feel better. For example, there is one you can grow yourself in your backyard or even in a pot on your patio and another that has been used successfully by the Chinese for at least 1,000 years

For hundreds of years, yoga has been considered an effective natural cure for depression. This is a very old Eastern world treatment, which incorporates body-stretching exercises with specific breathing exercises. The yoga postures and breathing techniques massage the body organs conditioning them so that they function as intended

Try Omega 3 fish oil first. You’ll want 1-2 grams of the EPA ingredient. Recent studies show that it’s as effective as 20mg of Prozac. It doesn’t work for everyone, but for those that it does, it’s great. Trader Joe’s makes a good brand at a good price, btw.

Supposedly St. John’s Wort will work for mild to moderate depression (it never worked for me though), but you need to ask your doctor before taking it if you’re on any other medications (including the contraceptive pill, which it renders useless), in case it interferes with them.
There’s also Bach’s Rescue Remedy which is for temporary calming, say if you feel like you might have a panic attack or just need a bit of extra help to get through a stressful part of the day. It can be bought in spray or pastille form.

Omega 3, Saint John’s Wort, HTP-5 (i got it at GNC), and Maca Root. Not only do they cure mild-moderate depression, but they leave you feeling energized and ready to take life by the horns!
I take it myself and it works great. The only thing is, you have to surround yourself with positive things as well and absolutely nothing too overwhelming (good friends, things you can easily accomplish, and a goal which is easily reachable)

I’m in the same boat as you, my friend. Best of luck!

Utterly astounding piece. Nothing but good can come out this search for the causes of and finding cures for viruses old and new. The more that can be taught and learned the better. There are people doing the leg work to find these cures and I only appreciate the fact that Anderson is walking with them. Being part of this process and reporting it back wholeheartedly to us.

General cleansing of the face or any other part of the body that is affected is a must (with a gentle natural cleanser that is Ph balanced).

But you could try some tea tree oil (diluted version either in water or a natural oil) you can get from almost any shop such as Priceline.

Just add 2 to 3 drops in some boiling water in a large bowl and steam
your face under a towel for about 10 minutes abot once every 2 or 3 days, depending on how bad it is. Hopefully it should clear up within about 2 weeks. Be careful not to burn yourself and close your eyes and breath it in. It has a strong aroma so be careful. It can also be good for your respiratory system.

That should work, becasue tea tree has antiseptic qualities and it is natural.
Though try do it at night or before you go to bed or when you are not goin on a date, etc, as it does have a menthol kind of scent to it, which lingers on for a few hours.

A good diet that inlcudes fresh food and less processed food can also help, coz there;s less toxins that are gonna be flushed out through the skin and cause pimples.
