I have had insomnia on and off since I was a baby, usually 2-3 months of sleeping regularly, and 1-2 months of not sleeping. A littler personal info may help you to, for lack of better words, diagnose me. I lead a very stressful life as an audio engineer, where my job consists of working with bigtime artists, at all hours and especially weekends. This doesnt seem to bother my girlfriend, she says she understands, and I do believe that she does, but I can’t help but to feel that I have no life on account of being called in at odd hours, and bad times. I do not have a drug problem or any thing like that, I’m just looking for some natural remedies to set my sleeping habits straight. I usually do not sleep more than 3 to 4 hrs and thats around 7am when I fall asleep. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What i find really helps is that avoid TV few hours before bed time anything with visual stimulant such as a tv, also avoid stimulants from food caffeine, alcohol, etc. How about lay in bed and read biggest thing i find is relaxing the mind makes it much easier to sleep ones you relax your mind enough youll fall asleep. Its very hard with the type of work and irregular hours to really create a good sleep schedule but avoiding certain things few hours before its time to sleep really does a lot.

Join the club! I have suffered insomnia on and off for years. My best remedy is: Valerian liquid or valerian herbal tea 1/2 hour before going to bed + warm milk + melatonin tablets from the health store or pharmacist/drug store. Melatonin is a natural product and resets your body’s sleep/wake cycle. These 3 things together really worked for me. If this doesn’t work for you go and get some accupuncture and some Chinese Herbs as I swear by this method also.

Yes, like the above Answerer mentioned, Valerian root is very good, also Melatonin, but it should not be used for prolonged time.
I cope with mine by doing yoga or reading, or playing violin (with a mute on of course.)
Sometimes, I wish I was like other people and have normal sleeping patterns, but I don’t..so I accepted myself the way I am.
I did use Ambien for a short while…it also helps…but…don’t make a habit out of it.

i find that eating healthy and exercising daily helps me to stay on a decent sleep schedule. before i changed my habits i couldn’t fall asleep no matter how exhausted or tired i was.
exercising will help you get a lot of your pent up work stress energy out and give you good energy instead. work out as early in the day as possible, but if you need to do it at night, work out at least 2 hours before you plan to be in bed.
if you try this and you still find yourself not being able to sleep, talk to a sleep doctor and possibly a cognitive behavior therapist. it may just be a sleeping disorder, or it may be caused from the stress at your job – that’s where the therapist may be able to help you cope with the stress better so that you aren’t unable to sleep because of stress. it could be a little of both, who knows. try it all – you’ve got your whole life to figure it out, you might as well try what’s available. (with the exception of alcohol and illegal drugs)
