Three Alternative Natural Remedies to Better Your Health

October 31st, 2009 by

Day in and day out we often find ourselves complaining about how tired we get throughout the day. One thing is for certain, if we don’t take action on anything nothing will ever change. The way most of our nine to fives lives work it is no wonder we have tendencies to stress and fatigue. It seems as though out diets have been getting worse and worse as the need for quick eating at cheap prices have helped fast food companies flourish in today’s world. So what can we do to sustain our energy levels, sleep better, live better and improve our general well-being? Well, the answer isn’t so simple however we can improve peices of our help through basic steps.

Along with exercise when the time allows, it is important to maintain a healthy diet. Here is a list of some simple and natural remedies to help with the fatigue of life.

1. Stop drinking soda or atleast drink healthier soda. Often times these carbonated beverages are filled with sugars, preservatives and caffiene all of which are bad for the human body and promote stress and fatigue. Many do not realize this but drinking soda can lead to tooth decay, breakdown the interior walls of the stomach, increase the chance of diabeties, increase stress and lessen the quality of sleep you get.

To provide a healthy alternative, try drinking a tonic call Kombucha Tea. Kombucha is a natural tonic that has been known as a healing tonic in the East. Kombucha is flavorful and quite the healthy alternative to caffinated beverages such as soda. Kombucha is also known for its versatile and healing properties. It is also possible to brew kombucha from home with the right know-how.

2. Another way to fight fatigue is to dump that coffee. Coffee can be a great way to wake in the morning but because of its high caffiene content, an individual is almost certain to have a caffiene crash by mid day and be sluggish until bed time. Coffee can promote stained teeth and bad breathe as well as increase stress levels due to the high level of caffiene. All in all there is not much nutritional value in such a drink, in fact, it can strip away nutrients in your body as well as dehydrate you.

A suggestion for a healthy replacement of coffee would be a tea known as Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate Tea is grown sustainabley in the rainforests of South America and has been known for its various healthy aspects. Yerba Mate itself carries a plethora of nutrients and minerals all of which are needed to sustain healthy living. Yerba Mate Tea, like Kombucha and Tahitian Noni Juice have been known to aide in numerous ailements. Yerba Matte has also been known to provide a huge burst of healthy, non-irratible energy that lasts throughout the day!

A supplement also found to be quite helpful in reducing fatigue is called Noni Juice. Noni Juice has been revered for centuries to provide good health for many who have taken the juice. Many have claimed that Tahitian Noni Juice has helped them with joint discomfort, arthritis, bad sleep, low energy levels and so forth.

These are just some basic concepts in finding alternatives to common unhealthy habits we as a society have deemed the norm. By looking outside the box there are many healthful opportunities that we commonly miss out on. By changing a few aspects of our diet we can reduce stress, reduce fatigue, improve our comfort, think clearer, act smarter, do more, live better and lead more active lives.

Common problems can occur however when we don’t research the supplements we take and we don’t actively take part in our health. It is important to be health-wise and to take an active role in learning and discovering ways to change your life for the better. It is truly amazing how such minor day to day changes can make all the difference in our health and general well being. Listening to your body more often is the key to great health and wellness and the ability to create more energy in your life.

Natural Remedies for Common Childhood Ailments

October 30th, 2009 by

Children are the most precious gift for both mother and father. Everybody wishes to take the best possible care of their children. There are some common ailments like nappy rash, chapped skin, sunburn, cough, toothache etc. which puts parents into worries and take away their sleep. This article discusses how aromatherapy can be helpful in treating these common ailments.

1. Nappy rash and sore chafed skin

Commercial baby oils are made with mineral oil, which can eventually be drying to delicate skin on other hand sweet almond oil is much kinder. To make aromatherapy baby oil, add four drops of rose or camomile oil to 4 fl oz (100 ml) of sweet almond oil. This is very soothing when stroked on nappy rash or irritated skin.

2. Chapped skin

Because children are always in a hurry they don’t always dry them properly. This can lead to chapped, sore skin, especially in winter. Add six drops of benzoin or myrrh oil to carrier oil and rub into the affected areas several times daily.

3. Sunburn

However careful you are with protective creams and lotions, sometimes a little patch of skin seems to burn. Apply neat lavender oil if the area is small. For larger areas, make up a spray by adding 12 drops of lavender oil to ½ pint (300 ml) of cold water. Spray the affected areas as needed. This is really good for sore skin because it is very soothing and avoids having to touch the affected area.

4. Coughs

Add three drops of eucalyptus and three drops of thyme oil to 4 fl oz (100 ml) of carrier oil. Massage, or rub, it into your child’s chest and throat. These oils are also helpful when inhaled in steam and you can use them in a vaporizer in your child’s bedroom at night. Simply place it beside the bed.

5. Toothache

The old remedy for toothache – oil of cloves – is helpful to get relief from pain. It has an anesthetizing effect on the nerve, lessening pain and bringing a lot of relief until you can get your child to a dentist.

Dip a cotton bud in neat clove oil then apply to the offending tooth. Repeat as necessary. For a teething baby, rub the sore gums with a little neat camomile oil several times a day.

Natural remedies to help a toddler sleep?

October 29th, 2009 by

I have a 1 year old and 2 year old. They sleep well through the night. However, when it is time to actually go to bed they are all wound up and it takes me on average an hour to actually get them to sleep. Is there any natural remedies to help make them sleepy (ex. warm milk)?

First off, don’t give them any caffeine ( soda or tea) after supper. Only milk or water if they are thirsty. Second, you might try some lavender oil in a diffuser in the living room before bedtime. Try chamomile tea if they are still up when it is time for resting.

Natural Remedies To Battle Snoring

October 28th, 2009 by

Snoring is a widespread problem by most men with a few cases on women. The problem in snoring is that most people don’t think that it’s a dangerous condition since it doesn’t appear to be as harmful as cancer and among any other sickness today. The problem in snoring is the fact that it is taken for granted by most people and thought of by many as completely harmless.

If you think your snoring problem is already causing your partner sleepless nights or giving you problems in breathing, don’t wait until you end up in the hospital for a snore surgery. It’s going to be a painful and expensive process if it happens, so as early as possible, try to resort to simple and natural remedies for you and your partner’s sake.

The way you sleep in bed at night makes a difference to your snoring habit. To at least minimize your snoring problem, try sleeping on your side. If you fall asleep and lose consciousness of your position, try putting a pillow just right behind you to prevent you from rolling over on your back. The pillow will help you resume your original sideways position.

If this doesn’t work for you or your partner, make sure that the pillows you’re using every night are clean. Preventing yourself from any cause of allergy is useless if your very bed and pillows are the ones that are causing it. Make sure that your pillows and pillow cases are cleaned regularly.

If you unconsciously breathe through your mouth, snoring is still possible. It’s because the air that passes through your mouth can still cause vibration from the throat. To prevent this, you can use chin straps to keep your mouth closed and help you breathe through your nose. This may be a simple way to prevent snoring but this idea has completely helped a number of snorers from snoring.

It’s never too late to make a move towards preventing yourself from snoring and with the natural methods mentioned, snoring can be completely avoided.

Backache – Backache Treatment, Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies and Backache Symptom

October 27th, 2009 by

Backache is medically known as lumbago. It is the disease which afflicts any region of the vertebral column or the associated muscles. Each of the 32 vertebrae can develop sudden pains which could become a chronic condition. Though we use the term backache in general, actually it is a collection of various types of pains of the vertebral column.

People find these kinds of pains to be more common as they grow older. Though there are no gender specifics, lumbago may be a bit more in men than in women.

In Ayurveda, backache is called as Nithamba Shoola. Ayurveda treats this pain as a vata disorder, which causes both the types of weaknesses, i.e. the bone weakness and the muscle weakness. Hence when deciding on a proper treatment pattern for backache, one needs to consider the vitiation of the vata dosha.

Let us see some of the common treatment patterns used in Ayurveda for the treatment of lumbago.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Backache

® Betel (Areca catechu)

Betel is one of the traditionally used herbs in the treatment of backache. The juice of the betel leaves is mixed with refined coconut oil. When this juice is applied on the loins, it provides relief from the sudden pains.

® Garlic (Allium sativum)

Among the many benefits that garlic has, an important one is relieving pains of lumbago. An extract of garlic provided to the patients provides relief from the pains without having any undesirable side effects.

® Indian Aloe (Aloe barbadensis)

The pulp of a single leaf of aloe consumed on a daily basis provides relief from backache problems.

® Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citrates)

Lemon grass is mixed with twice its bulk of coconut oil and applied externally on the affected regions. This eases the pains.

(2) Dietary Treatment for Backache

Since backache is a condition caused due to vata vitiation, any food that can aggravate the vata further must not be taken. Sour and fried foods must be totally avoided. Even pulses must be eliminated from the diet. Rice must be reduced; rather food grains such as wheat, millet and sorghum are better.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Backache

® The Ayurvedic preparation, Prasarani, is the drug that is most commonly used for the treatment of backache. Prasarani is Paederia foetida, which is a plant species. The method of use can be either external or internal. For better effects the oil of the plant is used. Massaging with this oil about two or three times a day provides immense relief from backache problems. Even if the pain subsides, the treatment must be continued for a month so that the pain does not recur.

® Other oils available for massaging the affected parts are the Narayana and the Mahanarayana oils. These oils must be used for fomentation or mixed in warm water to give a hot tub bath.

(4) Home Medications

® Mix equal proportions of limestone and honey. Apply this paste on the region where the pain is the severest.

® Grind some sesame seeds in water. Warm this solution and apply it repeatedly on the part where it pains the most.

® Put two teaspoonfuls of cumin seed powder in a glass of water and warm the solution. Soak a towel in this water and then use it to foment the affected parts. Relief should be obtained within a couple of hours.

® Roast about 100 grams of fenugreek seeds. Then grind them roughly and mix in them a quarter portion of rock salt. Put two teaspoonfuls of these in hot water every morning and evening and let the fumes come in contact with the region where the pain is persistent. This treatment provides relief in fifteen days.

® Take 1 gram of pure asafetida and mix it with egg yolk. Apply this paste on the affected spinal region. This is a quick method of getting relief from the pains, but it is a temporary method.

® Mix two or three pieces of cardamom in warm milk. Introduce about a pinch of turmeric in it. This is to be drunk every night before going to sleep. Immense relief will be obtained in the morning.

(5) Preventive Methods

® Instead of sleeping on a soft mattress at night, use a hard mattress. If you can, sleep on the ground with the back straight; that is, with the spine touching the ground as much as possible.

® Use ergonomic chairs in your workplace. See that the chair makes contact with the spine fully when you sit on it.

® Do not cramp yourself in one position. Shuffle your position often. When traveling, try to get up and move about whenever you can.

® Exercise often, but do not stretch your back. Perform gliding motions when exercising.

® Yogic asanas that can be used to prevent lumbago pains are:-

a) Bhujangasana

b) Halasana

c) Shalabhasana

d) Shavasana

e) Uttarapadasana
